The Quietly Skillful Professor

The late Dr Francis Lee Moh Shin is affectionately known as “Prof Lee” to his patients. Among his peers who hold him in high respect, he is simply known as FMS Lee.

A native of Ipoh, Dr Lee studied dentistry in the University of Sydney. He made his way to Perth and later London where he practiced General Dentistry. In 1960, Dr Lee became a clinical tutor in the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry in the then University of Malaya. He rose through the ranks quickly through his ability and merits, and became a full professor, still a rare entity in the present day Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore. Dr Lee also became the first local to head the Department of Oral Surgery in the university in post-colonial Singapore, a position he relinquish in 1978 when he set up his private practice.

Dr Lee went to Boston University for 6 months on a HMDP scholarship to refine his skills on Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. When he returned, he was the first Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon to be trained in Orthonagthic surgery in South East Asia. Dr Lee is thus known as the father of Modern Day Orthonagthic Surgery in Singapore. His successor described his as a “quietly skillful surgeon” and a “highly gifted teacher”.
